Rawmarsh and Conisbrough MP John Healey has welcomed the news that plans for the new Rotherham Gateway railway station have taken a major step forward.

It’s after South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) approved more than £11m in development funding.

John wrote to the previous government and has written to the Transport Secretary to give his full support to the plans that have been developed by Rotherham Council.

The latest announcement will allow Rotherham Council to move forward with detailed design work, land assembly and preparation for procurement.

John Healey MP said:

“I’m pleased to see plans to bring back mainline train services to Rotherham through a new station at Parkgate have taken another vital step forward.

“Rotherham Council have been working on an impressive case for some time and I was pleased to back the scheme from the start.

“A new station in Parkgate is ideally placed to provide the greatest benefits of mainline train services for the town centre, the surrounding areas across the wider Dearne Valley region and to connect up with the Tram Train service already in the area.”

The new station would see the reintroduction of mainline train services in Rotherham – including receiving direct London services for the first time since the 1980s.

Estimates by Rotherham Council say the new station and nearby developments could create more than 400 jobs locally.
