A new mental health support programme has launched for young people at Unity Boxing Centre in Parkgate.
Box to Beat It is a 12-week programme run in association with England Boxing that uses non-contact boxing and mentoring to improve young people’s well-being.
It comes after John Healey MP, invited Head of Operations at England Boxing, Avoen Perryman, to the centre earlier this year to see how it was linking up with the community and providing mental health support to children.
The programme has been designed together with young people and in partnership with mental health charity MIND.
Rawmarsh & Conisbrough MP John Healey said: “The new Box to Beat It programme at Unity Boxing will complement the great work that Abdul and his team already do with the community in Parkgate and across the borough.
“Young people can work through a series of activities that give them the tools to support their mental health. This is a new model of social prescribing which has been created by England Boxing and the mental health charity MIND.
“Young people can be referred by a Health Practitioner, Link Worker, Community Organisation or they can refer themselves to take part in the programme which runs for 12 weeks.”
Box to Beat It is aimed at young people aged 10 – 16 years old who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems.
All coaches are England Boxing qualified coaches with DBS, Safeguarding and First Aid qualifications. Additionally, coaches are Mental Health First Aid trained and experienced in supporting young people who are experiencing mental health problems.
