Rawmarsh and Conisbrough MP John Healey saw first hand how the government’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme is helping to improve sporting opportunities locally.
Parkgate Astro, run by Rotherham United Community Trust, received £483,703 to help upgrade the artificial grass pitch at the facility on Greasbrough Road.
The Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme provides funding to make essential facility improvements, so that communities have high-quality pitches to play on, building on investment from previous years.
The programme is investing £125 million in 2024/25 to support facilities across the whole of the UK.
Parkgate Astro stands as a testament to what national local collaboration can achieve —creating inclusive, accessible spaces that bring communities together.
John Healey MP said:
“This funding is a real boost for communities across the area – ensuring more people, including young people, have access to high-quality pitches that support both physical activity and wellbeing.
“Grassroots sport clubs are at the heart of our community and I’m pleased to see that vital improvements are being made to sporting facilities like Parkgate Astro.
“This government’s continued investment means more community clubs and facilities can get people participating in the sports they love.”
Dan Wilson, CEO at Rotherham United Community Trust, said;
“This investment has the potential to be a real game-changer for Rotherham
“In addition to the grants, we’ve already received to redevelop Parkgate Astro, it will further help to break down barriers to participation and create new opportunities for people across the borough to thrive through sport and community activity.
“It’s a clear sign of progress towards our ambition of a healthier, successful, and more united Rotherham.”
