In recent weeks, we have once again seen the tragic consequences of open water swimming. Sadly, this includes the deaths of Muhammed Secka and Mackenzie Swift. The loss of these young lives has been felt deeply across Rotherham and Doncaster.

I have written to Emma Reynolds, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, outlining my support for Lee Pitcher‘s Private Members’ Bill, Sam’s Law. The name is in memory of Sam Haycock, who tragically died at Ulley Reservoir in 2021.

The Water Safety Bill (Sam’s Law) seeks to improve access and maintenance of water safety equipment, create new criminal offences related to damaging life‑saving equipment, and promotes water safety education in schools.
