John Healey, John Marren and Natalie Brown at Community Shop GoldthorpeDEARNE MP John Healey visited a social enterprise in Goldthorpe to hear about a new, trailblazing project that will reduce food waste.

Community Shop, on Barnsley Road, sells discounted food and offers help and advice to people on means-tested benefits. It opened in November 2013 and has recently been refurbished.

Its parent company, Company Shop, has been awarded nearly £2m from the Government’s food distribution fund, to rescue and redistribute harder-to-reach surplus food from manufacturers.

The profits of food sales from this project will be invested into setting up more Community Shops.

John said: “Goldthorpe’s Community Shop goes from strength to strength in helping family budgets stretch further, and the new refurb means it’s now even more of a centre for community support.

“The staff and volunteers offer a warm welcome, sound advice and lots of activities to join in.

“Now its parent Company shop has won this big new Government grant to act as experts to help food producers reduce waste, more areas will gain from getting a Community Shop like ours as all the gains from this work will be devoted to developing Community Shops.”
