John Healey MP was invited to look at the refurbishment works which have transformed Winterwell Post Office on Melton High Street.

New owners, Subhash and Mayur Khunti, took over the shop in July and last month Subhash also became the Postmaster with the branch closing for a month for a big building project and refit.

Subhash and Mayur have extended the premises by knocking through to the property next door which increased the overall floor space to 900sq ft.

The whole store has been refurbished and modernised. The old-style fortress Post Office counter has been removed and replaced with a modern open-plan counter making the store open plan, brighter and more user friendly for customers.

Previously the shop was just a Post Office with a few greeting cards but has now become a Go Local Extra store with a full range of products introduced to meet the needs of the local community.

John Healey MP said: “The Post Office and store at Winterwell looks totally different following its renovation. It’s been modernised and the whole shop is much bigger.

“It’s great to see that the community has kept its vital post office and at the same time is benefitting from a convenience store offering a wider range of goods. I’d like to congratulate Subhash and Mayur on all the improvements that have been made, the investment is a big boost to the area.”

Subhash and Mayur are experienced Postmasters and retailers and Winterwell Post Office and the Go Local Extra convenience store are family-run.

Postmaster Subhash and Mayur Khunti said: “Our customers have been excited over the past months to hear about the plans to significantly increase the size of the shop and to have space to greatly improve the range that we can now stock in the shop.

“The Post Office is crucial to this community for posting items, returning home shopping and bill payments and as there are no banks nearby it is great that customers can do all of their banking here on behalf of all the major High Street banks as well as ordering travel money. The Post Office is also open longer hours than before.”

The new opening hours for the Post Office are Monday to Friday: 9am – 6pm; Saturday: 9am – 2pm. The Go Local Extra convenience store is open Monday to Thursday: 7am – 8pm; Friday and Saturday: 7am – 9pm; Sunday: 9am – 7pm.
