John Healey MP has signed the UK Steel Charter, which aims to boost the amount of UK-produced steel in construction and infrastructure projects.
The MP, whose constituency covers the Aldwarke steel plant in Rotherham, has long argued that the Government should recognise the importance of the steel industry in procurement.
He said:
“I am proud to sign the UK Steel Charter and give my support to this vital industry.
“The UK steel industry directly employs over 30,000 people and supports thousands more in supply chains and local communities across the United Kingdom, including in South Yorkshire.
“Steel provides the foundation for a successful industrial strategy, so the Government should back UK steel by using our products in construction, infrastructure and military projects.
“I would also encourage local businesses to consider signing up to the UK Steel Charter to maximise opportunities for our steel producers.”
