Youth unemployment triples in constituency in year

Youth unemployment has more than tripled in the Wentworth and Dearne constituency in the last year.

New employment statistics showed the number of 18-24 year olds out of work for more than a year was 65 in June 2011 – but this rocketed to 225 by June this year.

And 12 people are chasing every available job.

John Healey MP said:

“Young people in our area are still paying the price for this Government’s economic failure.

“Long term youth unemployment here in Wentworth and Dearne is up 246 % in the last year, but ministers are still clinging to the failing policies that have driven our economy back into recession.

“Out of touch ministers need to wake up to the jobs crisis they’re responsible for and take urgent action now. They should start with Labour’s Real Jobs Guarantee and get our young people back to work.”

In parts of Rotherham the number of 18-24-year-olds out of work has multiplied more than five times over.
