John accused Sajid Javid of abandoning his pledge for Government support as Tata prepares to sell off its South Yorkshire plants.

On Friday the company stated that it would go ahead with a separate sales process for its specialty steel operations in Rotherham, Stocksbridge and Hartlepool.

Following a statement on this from Business Secretary, Mr Healey wrote that the Government’s position was now “totally at odds” with an earlier promise that “a package of support worth hundreds of millions of pounds will be made available to potential buyers of Tata Steel UK.”

In a letter to Mr Javid, Mr Healey urged him to clarify what Government support, if any, would be on the table to satisfy potential buyers and guarantee jobs in Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

This comes ahead of a meeting about the implications of Tata’s announcement between Mr Healey and Business Minister Anna Soubry, Rotherham MP Sarah Champion and Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith, which will take place today.
