Safer crossing secured for shoppers at Retail World

Shoppers in Rotherham will soon benefit from new safety improvements when a pedestrian crossing is installed at Retail World. Work has already started on the main road outside the popular shopping centre, which has long been notorious with pedestrians trying to reach the shops, particularly amongst those travelling by public transport.

Commenting on the new safety improvements, local MP John Healey said:

“Over the past few years, I have had lots of people contacting me asking if a pedestrian crossing can be installed at Retail World. Many of them have had difficulties crossing the main road, especially those who are elderly, disabled or have young children.”

“I first pressed the case for a safe crossing on the main road outside Retail World two years ago. The new crossing is good news for everyone who visits the shopping centre and will mean that people using public transport will be able to cross the road safely, and those travelling by car can be reassured that pedestrians have a designated place to cross.”

“It is important for all of us to consider safety at places such as these, which is why I will continue to make the views of local residents known to the people who make the decisions.”

Roy Wicks, Director at the Transport Executive said:

“As a result of the close working relationship between Rotherham Council and bus operators and the Transport Executive, I am pleased to confirm that we are responding to local concerns and a pedestrian crossing will be installed shortly to link both sides of the highway between the bus stops outside Retail World. A replacement bus shelter with seating will also be installed in early October on the Rotherham side of the roundabout, and Rotherham Council will be constructing a new layby for buses to use.”
