John backs plan for new youth services in Rotherham and the Dearne

New facilities for young people in the Rotherham area could be built under Government plans to invest in youth services across England.

Local MP, John Healey, today welcomed proposals that will pave the way for long-lasting investment in local youth facilities. He said if the plans were passed by Parliament, local communities could bid for funding to improve what’s on offer to young people in the area.

Mr Healey said:

“Young people in the Rotherham area need more things to do and more places to go, so I’m delighted that the Government is going to make a major investment in youth services."

“I want our area to benefit and over the coming months I will be talking to young people and local community organisations about what facilities they would like to see available in the future. It will be up to them to decide what our area needs and draw up proposals for funding, whether that’s for sports facilities, places to go to participate in activities like dance and drama, mobile youth centres or skate parks."

“Once the plans are passed by Parliament and the scheme is fully up and running we can then be quick off the mark with our bid for funding."

Funding for new youth services are part of Government plans to reinvest in local communities unclaimed assets that have been lying dormant in bank and building society accounts for at least 15 years. The plan was started by Mr Healey as Treasury minister three years ago, when he commissioned a study on the scale of unclaimed assets and held discussions with banks, building societies and charities.
