Alistair Darling visits South Yorkshire to discuss rights for workers

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry – Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP – and South Yorkshire MPs met with 250 local trade union representatives in Rotherham on Friday to discuss the rights of local workers.

The Rights at Work Reception event was hosted by South Yorkshire MPs to give shop stewards and grassroots union representatives an opportunity to convey the opinions of local workers.

A progress report was provided about implementing rights at work.

Keynote Speaker Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP said:

"I would like to thank MPs in South Yorkshire for organising this event and for inviting me.

"South Yorkshire has seen many changes to industry over recent years and has benefited from major investment.

"It is important that we continue to create opportunities like this. It’s always helpful to have the opportunity to hear first hand from union representatives about issues affecting local workers."

Local MP John Healey said:

"The event gave South Yorkshire MPs and local trade unionists the valuable chance to discuss concerns in the workplace. It was also the opportunity for us as MPs to recognise the invaluable voluntary job that union representatives do day-in, day-out  to support their colleagues at work".
