MP WINS POLICE STATION REPRIEVE
A CONTROVERSIAL decision to shut Wath police station enquiry desk has been put on hold.
Wentworth MP John Healey has been battling the move since the end of last year.
Nearly 500 people signed his petition and he has met police chiefs to urge them to re-think the decision.
Mr Healey said: “I have been given assurances that the public enquiry desk in Wath will stay open until more information has been gathered and more discussions have taken place.
“I welcome this reprieve and will carry on fighting to keep the police station open to the public for good.
“But it is clear that police don’t think enough people are using the enquiry desk – so if local people want it to stay they have to take every opportunity to use it.”
The enquiry desk was due to close on April 1.
Mr Healey’s campaign to save the public enquiry desk has been backed by local councillors, Wentworth North Area Assembly, shopkeepers, Wath community groups and members of South Yorkshire Police Authority.
He added: “Plans for the closure have really concerned local people and I have told police that the loss of this established contact point in Wath risks damaging confidence in local operations.”
People can still sign the petition at Mr Healey’s constituency office, 79 High Street, Wath-upon-Dearne.
