John Healey MP has vowed to fight any proposals to close Wath-upon-Dearne police station, after hearing the facility could close to the public in April.

He made his feelings clear in a letter to South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes this week.

Mr Healey has also launched a petition, which is available to sign at his constituency office at 79 High Street, Wath. Blank copies are also available to take away for people who want to help support the campaign.

Local councillors, members of Wath Community Partnership and many of Wath’s local shopkeepers have already pledged their support for the campaign, and are displaying posters and collecting petition names.

Mr Healey said: “I was extremely concerned to hear there are plans to close Wath police station to the public next year and will fight hard against any such move.

“Wath police station is well-used and it is reassuring for residents that it is there. People want – and should be able – to see their local police officers and report incidents first hand. Closing the front desk can only damage relations with local residents, something which police forces everywhere are working hard to improve.”
