MP TRIES OUT NEW £1.4M SPORTS FACILITIES
Wentworth MP John Healey sampled the results of Big Lottery Fund investment into school and community sports facilities in Rotherham.
St Pius Catholic High School in Wath received nearly £1.4m for a four-court sports hall and changing facilities.
Mr Healey played badminton with year seven pupils on his visit on Friday.
He said: “Alongside big government investment, Lottery money is giving local pupils and communities a real boost by helping provide first class facilities right on their doorstep.
“I hope this will encourage more people of all ages to be active or just try a new hobby.”
Pupils and members of the public can play netball, cricket, basketball, badminton and indoor athletics at the facility.
Helen Yates, head of PE at St Pius, said: “From cheerleading to trampolining, the range of activities we are now able to offer pupils and the wider community has meant that there really is something for everyone to get involved in. It is a testament to how much the pupils and wider community respect the hall that after three years of heavy use the facilities still look brand new.”
Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Over £58.8m of Big Lottery Fund cash has been channelled into first class sports facilities across Yorkshire and the Humber, giving thousands of people new opportunities to get active and participate in a wide range of sports not previously available to them.
“This research has shown that accessible local facilities can inspire many of those least interested in sport to get out, get active and improve their health in first rate surroundings.”
