MP TO SPEAK AT MEMORIAL REDEDICATION
John Healey MP is to attend the rededication of Rawmarsh’s war memorial, which has undergone a £350,000 facelift.
Back in 2006, local councillors suggested the area around the war memorial on Rawmarsh Hill should be improved as part of the government-funded Housing Market Renewal improvement programme for Rawmarsh and Parkgate.
The design was drafted and agreed in 2008 and work began in March 2009.
Improvements have been made to the area around the memorial, including repairs to the retaining wall, restoration of the fountain and trough. A commemorative stone centrepiece has been introduced along with a new boundary wall and planter at the junction of Westfield Road and Rawmarsh Hill.
The Wentworth MP will speak and lay a wreath at the service on Monday.
He said: “In 1918, a Parkgate and Rawmarsh war memorial committee was formed and they worked long and hard to raise money and build a memorial, so determined were they that those who gave their lives for our country should be honoured.
“Local people today are committed to continuing to recognise the sacrifice of previous generations of men from Rawmarsh and Parkgate and remember members of the armed services currently overseas.
“This improvement work recognises the ongoing significance of the memorial to the community.”
Further works are planned for the Second World War Memorial Garden, which sits above the original war memorial site.
