MP URGES MINERS TO LODGE COMPLAINTS OVER COMPENSATION FEES

A LOCAL MP has urged miners to make sure they get money they are entitled to, as part of his ongoing campaign to push solicitors to pay back deductions taken from coal health compensation.

John Healey made a breakthrough in his campaign back in November when Raleys agreed to write to 22,000 of clients inviting them to complain about the NUM fee taken from payouts.

But Raleys only gave a three-month window for responses – so complaints must be lodged by the end of February.

Mr Healey said: “Raleys say they have written to all clients who had NUM deductions taken. But I know from constituents that not all those who might be entitled to claim back money taken from their compensation have received letters – some people might have moved house or want to claim on behalf of deceased relatives.

“Raleys are only giving until the end of February to respond to this offer, so if constituents haven’t received a letter and think fees may have been deducted from your compensation, they should get in touch.

“I want every miner or their family who is entitled to it to claim this money back.”

Around four months ago, Mr Healey stepped up his campaign to put pressure on solicitors to return fees that should not have been taken from payouts under the Coal Health Compensation Scheme. Some solicitors charged fees even though their costs were being met by the government.

Hundreds of ex-miners in his Wentworth constituency came forward and the amount returned so far is more than £20,000 – and rising.

The Coal Health Compensation Scheme was set up in 1998 to help ex-miners suffering from respiratory disease and vibration white finger. In Rotherham over 20,000 miners and their families have received over £120m and in Barnsley over £250m has been paid out in 42,000 claims.

Constituents who think deductions may have been taken from their compensation and would like some help can ring Mr Healey’s office on 01709 875943. You can also request a fact sheet.
