MINER’S KNEE CLAIMANTS DON’T NEED LAWYER – MP

EX-MINERS in Rotherham don’t need a lawyer to help them claim benefits for miner’s knee, a local MP has warned.

John Healey issued the advice following the government’s recent announcement that people with osteoarthritis of the knee – known as miner’s knee – would be able to claim industrial injuries disablement benefit (IIDB).

The Wentworth MP said: “I want to make it clear that claimants do not need to use a solicitor to get this extra help. I know some firms have been touting for business and advertising in local papers in Rotherham and Barnsley.

“I received information just recently from the minister on this. It is important for people to know that they do not have to fork out for a lawyer when they can claim for free through our local Jobcentre Plus by calling 0845 758 5433. Experienced staff there will be able to help with any queries people may have.

“I have pulled together a fact sheet for ex-miners who want more information on how to apply for this new government help. Constituents can call into my office in High Street, Wath to pick one up or phone 01709 875943 and I’ll be happy to post one to them.”

In 1999 the government set up a scheme for miners suffering from respiratory disease and vibration white finger. Up to now more than 20,000 ex-miners and their families in Rotherham have received over £120 million in compensation.

Mr Healey was among MPs campaigning for ex-miners with knee injuries to be recognised as well and for those men who suffer with this very painful condition to receive financial help.
