John Healey MP issues statement on flooding in Rotherham and the Dearne

Local MP John Healey has issued a statement today on the adverse weather conditions which are currently affecting Rotherham and the Dearne.

The MP has been receiving updates from the emergency services, including South Yorkshire Police and both Rotherham and Barnsley Council. He has also been in touch with the Secretary of State for the Environment, Rt Hon David Miliband MP, and will be with him this afternoon when he gives a statement to MPs in the House of Commons. Mr Healey is also in direct contact with DEFRA Minister Ian Pearson MP, who is currently on route to South Yorkshire.

Mr Healey said:

"I have spoken personally with the Environment Minister Ian Pearson who is on his way up to South Yorkshire now to see damage and response in Sheffield, which is the area worst affected.

"The rescue and protection efforts throughout the night and today have been magnificent, with emergency teams working alongside the council and local residents to deal with floods on a scale we've simply never seen before in South Yorkshire.

"Hundreds of local residents and businesses, many of whom have not been in the headlines or in the TV pictures, have had their homes or premises badly hit by the rising water. Some of these have already contacted me, and once the immediate threat to life and limb is over it will be essential to provide longer term help to deal with the damage and loss. I will work with local and national agencies to try to make sure this assistance is given."
