TWO local heroes met the Prime Minister after their MP John Healey invited them to a special reception in London.

The event to honour ‘community heroes’ was hosted at 10 Downing Street by Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah.

Mr Healey invited Cynthia Shaw and Ian Lomas, both of Harley, Rotherham.

Mrs Shaw, 70, has led the campaign for improved safety on the A6135 Sheffield Road at Harley and is chairwoman of the A6135 Accident Reduction Group.

Mr Healey has helped Mrs Shaw and the group campaign on the issue for several years.

Mrs Shaw said of her visit: “I felt privileged and very special. I was made to feel so welcome by Mr Healey and equally so by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“It’s an experience I will never forget and I am deeply grateful for having had the opportunity to see the human face of our working government.”

Mr Lomas, 71, has been chairman and secretary of the Harley Village Partnership for 10 years and is a Wentworth parish councillor. He is also involved with the A6135 Accident Reduction Group.

He said the day was “brilliant” and a “wonderful opportunity.”

Mr Healey said: “I was really pleased to be able to bring Cynthia and Ian to London in recognition of their commitment and hard work for the community. Everyone in our area can be proud of them both.”
