NEW HELP FOR THIRD SECTOR WITH GOVERNMENT'S MODERNISATION FUND

INNOVATIVE measures are being taken to improve the economic circumstances of third sector organisations in Rotherham through a new fund being delivered by the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

Through the Real Help for Communities: Modernisation Fund, bursaries of £1,000 are available to pay for advice on how organisations in the sector can cut costs and become more resilient through mergers and collaborative working.

Wentworth MP John Healey has been quick to back the programme that is part of a £42.5m government support package for the sector to counter the recession.

He said: “Inevitably, different demands are being placed on charities and community organisations as a result of the recession.

“This money will help them adapt so they can be better placed to deal with current and emerging needs and continue to give quick, responsive help.”

Organisations who successfully applied for bursaries could then be eligible to apply for a grant of up to £10k to help pay costs involved in moving towards collaboration or merger.

John Healey said: “In some situations, such as where there’s an overlap between two organisations, working together can mean making the most of resources and reducing costs.

“It can ensure as much effort as possible is going into frontline services to provide more help to more people at this crucial time.”

Organisations must be wholly or primarily engaged in providing services related to health and wellbeing; advice, information and guidance; and loss of income, training and skills.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said: “Great work is being done by third sector organisations throughout Rotherham, but the impact of the recession is starting to bite.

“The sector can become more resilient by looking at ways it can deliver services more efficiently.”

Eligible organisations will have a turnover of between £150,000 and £750,000, with applications to be submitted by July 17.

“The Modernisation Fund provides resources to help organisations to consider their options, including looking at new partnership opportunities, cultural change and identifying new and emerging needs.”

Further elements of the Modernisation Fund include interest free loans of between £30,000 and £500,000 for organisations delivering services that benefit people or communities affected by the recession.
