MP URGES RESIDENTS TO HAVE SAY ON POST OFFICES
Wentworth MP John Healey wants local residents to have a say about plans to shut six post offices in Rotherham, and he’s pledged to cross-examine Post Office Ltd’s proposals to close three branches in his constituency - Whinney Hill, Harley and Parkgate.
Mr Healey has already met the Post Office chief responsible for the review of the future of post offices in our area, as consultation begins in South Yorkshire as part of a nationwide programme designed to make the best use of £1.7 billion in government financial support and make sure the network is viable in the future.
He has also had discussions with the postmaster and postmistresses involved as well as Rotherham councillors and senior managers. He has proposed that the council’s area assembly organise a special public meeting, which senior Post Office figures have told him they will attend.
He said: “This would give local residents the chance to hear for themselves about the case for closure, and question the basis for doing so.
“It is inevitable there will be some closures in our area – four million fewer people use the Post Office each week than two years ago and eight out of 10 pensioners now choose to have their pensions paid straight into a bank account.
“But I don’t think we should be prepared to accept any closure plans unless there is a strong case for doing so. I know a number of local residents who rely on these post offices, and there needs to be easy alternatives for them.”
Mr Healey has written to residents and businesses near to the affected branches urging them to have their say and letting them know how to do so.
