MP HITS OUT AFTER ROTHERHAM SCHOOLS FUNDING SLASHED

Schools secretary Michael Gove yesterday announced 719 school revamps already signed up to the Building Schools for the Future scheme would be scrapped.

The cuts will hit three schools in John Healey’s Wentworth and Dearne constituency: Milton, Swinton and St Pius.

These schools have spent over a year planning for the rebuild which was expected to start in August 2011.

Funding for four other schools in Rotherham – Aston, Hilltop, Abbey and Oakwood – has also been stopped and cash for Maltby Academy is under threat.

John Healey said: “This is a black day for education in our area.

“It makes little sense to cut these long-term investments in our children and for the future. The Conservative-Lib Dem coalition government are letting these schools and the next generation of children down.

“They do not need to make cuts as fast or as deep as this – their independent experts showed befort the Budget that our Labour plans would have done the job of cutting the deficit over the next four years. But they have chosen to go further and faster than they need to.”
